Portland Water Bureau contractors will close a lane of traffic on Southeast Tacoma Street at 19th Avenue beginning 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 to replace an aging water main pipe.

Work hours will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for about a week. There may be additional closures at the intersection through the summer and fall. Some parking will be removed during the construction.

Southeast Tacoma Street is a primary route for travelers through the Sellwood neighborhood and connects with McLoughlin Boulevard/OR 99E and the Sellwood Bridge. Those looking to cross the Willamette River may consider the Ross Island Bridge as an alternate.

Impacts to sidewalks and bicycle routes will change during the various phases of work on this project. The traveling public should stay alert and follow instructions from signage and flaggers.

Other traffic changes include:

  • Southeast 19th Avenue between Tenino and Spokane streets: Traffic will be detoured one block east or west at Tenino and Spokane.
  • Sidewalks on Southeast 19th Avenue will remain open. Pedestrians will be detoured to the opposite side of the intersection from the construction.
  • This work will impact bicycle travel on the Southeast 19th Avenue Greenway. In some cases, people cycling on 19th will be detoured one block east or west. Other times, cyclists will be diverted onto the sidewalk. Reader board displays and signage will direct people to the safest route.
  • TriMet: No bus line stops will be impacted, but travelers should plan for delays.

Morrison Bridge bike, pedestrian lanes narrow

Bicycle and pedestrian lanes on the east and west ends of the Morrison Bridge narrow to seven feet beginning Monday, Aug. 8. The lane changes reduce the space by half, according to a recent release.

Cyclists and pedestrians are advised to use caution when riding or walking across the Morrison Bridge and be aware of construction materials and work in the area. The reduction will be in place for about a month.

County contractors are setting up equipment for work to clear off old bridge paint and apply a new coat. The Morrison Bridge Paint Project began in January 2022 and will continue through 2023. Visit the website for more information: multco.us/morrisonpaint
