Donna Zimmerman’s background with county operations will come into use this upcoming January when she takes a seat on the Barton County Commission. Zimmerman won the two-person race for the District 5 office on the commission after last week’s primary election.

Zimmerman worked for the county for 40 years and her last 26 years as County Clerk up until her retirement last winter.

"I'm super excited," said Zimmerman. "Having served the county in some capacity for the last 40 years, it's been hard being away. I'm excited to rejoin and see if we can make a difference at the county."

More than 45% of registered voters cast a ballot in Barton County last week. Zimmerman garnered more than 60% of the District 5 votes.

"I certainly know the process and how the commission meetings run," said Zimmerman. "I feel like my background in budgeting and taxes will be beneficial. I'm sure there will be some aspects that will be new. I'm excited about the new challenge."

Zimmerman, Tricia Schlessiger and Duane Reif all won seats on the commission. The three newly-elected officials will join Shawn Hutchinson and Barb Esfeld on the commission in January.
