GENOA, Neb.-Authorities said a Kansas man drowned in a Nebraska lake over the weekend.

At around 1:23 p.m. on Saturday, the Nance County Sheriff's Office and Genoa Fire and Rescue responded to the report of a drowning at a private lake south of Genoa.

Deputies arrived and were told by witnesses that the man had been swimming about 100 yards from shore when he was heard calling for help before disappearing under the water.

Authorities said deputies were on the scene about five minutes after receiving the call and 12 minutes after the man was last seen.

Deputies entered the lake but were unable to locate the man, but were unsuccessful.

Further efforts by deputies, volunteers and first responders were unsuccessful in locating the man.

Mutual aid was requested from the Platte County and Oxford Dive Teams, who arrived with sonar equipment and located the body of Wayne E. Mathias, 79, of Augusta, Kansas.
