Montgomery County's COVID cases fall 34.7%; Alabama cases plummet 27.9%

Alabama reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 12,047 new cases. That's down 27.9% from the previous week's tally of 16,712 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Alabama ranked 18th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 14.2% from the week before, with 781,487 cases reported. With 1.47% of the country's population, Alabama had 1.54% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 13 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Montgomery County reported 625 cases and six deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 957 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 63,328 cases and 971 deaths.

Elmore County reported 232 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 372 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 26,195 cases and 352 deaths.

Autauga County reported 137 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 200 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 17,605 cases and 221 deaths.

Dallas County reported 87 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 180 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 9,598 cases and 249 deaths.

Lowndes County reported 22 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 26 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,912 cases and 79 deaths.

​ Across Alabama, cases fell in 65 counties, with the best declines in Jefferson County, with 1,862 cases from 2,531 a week earlier; in Madison County, with 815 cases from 1,278; and in Mobile County, with 903 cases from 1,261. ​

Within Alabama, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Clay County with 370 cases per 100,000 per week; Walker County with 367; and Tallapoosa County with 367. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Jefferson County, with 1,862 cases; Mobile County, with 903 cases; and Madison County, with 815.

In Alabama, ​ 83 ​ people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 19 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,436,458 people in Alabama have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 19,974 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 92,112,922 people have tested positive and 1,033,556 people have died.

Alabama's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Aug. 7. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

Hospitals in 24 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 24 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 33 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
