20-year-old ejected, killed in Virginia car crash after van runs stop sign

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WRIC) — State Police have begun an investigation into a deadly crash in the Isle of Wight Monday morning.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred in Carrsville around 6:45 a.m. at the intersection of Joyners Bridge Road and Holly Run Drive. One person is confirmed to have died as a result of the crash.

Police said the investigation revealed that the driver of a 2006 Chevrolet van was traveling southbound on Holly Run Drive when he drove through a stop sign without stopping. At the same time, 2009 Chevrolet Silverado was driving through the intersection headed eastbound on Joyners Bridge Road, and crashed into the van in the intersection.

The Silverado truck flipped over upon impact, and partially ejected the driver, who police identified as 20-year-old Mason Paul Rhodes, of Chesapeake. The truck landed on top of Rhodes, killing him upon impact.

The driver of the van was identified as 24-year-old Jose Ivan Marquex-Lizardi, of Glen Allen, Virginia. He was left with non-life threatening injuries and was charged with reckless driving, no operator’s license, and no seatbelt.
