Temperatures soared across Maine on Sunday, setting records in Portland.
The high temperature in Portland reached 96 degrees, breaking the old record for the date of 93 set back in 2001 and matched in 2018.
The highest temperature ever recorded in August in Portland is 103 on Aug. 2, 1975.
Achieving such a high temperature in Portland is not easy to do. Normally on a hot summer day, temperatures will be cooler at the coast thanks to ocean influence, but a strong westerly flow brought the hot, humid air all the way to the coast on Sunday.
Portland also set a record for the highest low temperature for the date. The temperature only got down to 74 degrees Sunday, breaking the old record of 71 set in 2018.
Temperature records in Portland go back to 1940.
Augusta tied its record for the warmest low temperature of the date, dipping to just 72. That ties the record set in 1980. The high in Augusta Sunday reached 93.

Several rounds of showers are likely Monday and Tuesday and there is the chance of some flooding and ponding on roadways with some of the heavy downpours.
