Warriors fall to Redbirds

Dwight erupted for four runs in the third inning to overcome a slight deficit and went on to rout Pontiac 17-2 in junior high softball Saturday.

Dwight scored a run in the top of the first inning but the Warriors responded with a run in the bottom of the opening frame to pull even, and then pushed across a marker in the second for a short-lived 2-1 lead.

Kenzie Fetgatter and Kira Johnson each drew one walks in the Pontiac first. With Carley Schneeman at the plate, a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance with Fetgatter being able to score from second base to tie the game.

PJHS had the bases loaded when a pitch got away from the DJHS catcher. Johnson was out trying to score on the play to end the inning.

Johnson allowed a two-out walk in the second but got out of the issue. The next time she got the ball, she had a one-run lead.

The Warriors went up 2-1 in the second when Fetgatter walked with the bases loaded, forcing home Leah Wilson.

Things got bas for the home team in the third as Dwight scored four times and did not look back. The Redbirds added three runs in the fourth inning, three more in the fifth and ended the game with a six runs in the sixth.

Cloe Gall, who came in relief of starter Delaney Boucher in the second, shut the Warriors down over the final 4 2/3 innings. Gall got the win with six strikeouts to go with four walks, one hit batter and she gave up a base knock. Boucher yielded six walks, hit a batter.

Mikayla Chambers had two hits, including a triple, for Dwight. Avery Crouch had a hit and two runs batted in and Boucher had a triple and RBI. Madilynn Lucas had a two-base hit.

Rylie Stadler had the lone base hit for Pontiac (0-2).

Johnson took the loss in the circle after allowing eight runs (one earned), four hits and five walks. She struck out nine. Kennedy Abraham walked 10 and hit two batters in relief. She fanned three. Kinsley Hamilton closed out the game.
