Joohyung Kim completely ran away with the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, and it earned him a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.
Kim, after firing an incredible 27 on his front nine, posted a 9-under 61 to take the four-shot win in the season-finale event at Sedgefield Country Club. The victory not only marked the first for the 20-year-old on the PGA Tour, but it gives him an instant Tour membership and secures his spot in the postseason.
Though Kim bogeyed the 10th, it didn’t matter much. He made four straight pars before tapping in a birdie on the par-5 15th and then making another at the 16th — which pushed his lead back to four strokes. From there, Kim rode in a pair of pars to take the win in North Carolina.
Kim, who opened the week with a quadruple bogey on No. 1 on Thursday, entered Sunday two shots back of Sungjae Im after his third-round 68. After opening the final round with a par, Kim took off.
Kim rattled off four birdies and an eagle in five straight holes, and then pushed to eight under with a pair of birdies to close out the front nine. That gave him a 27 through nine holes, which matches the second-lowest Tour round ever scored on nine holes.
Kim has made just nine appearances on Tour so far this season, though the South Korean has six international wins to his name — including at The Singapore International earlier this year. Kim finished in seventh at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last month, and took home a career-best third-place finish at the Genesis Scottish Open.
