Kids learn to land a job, or a fish

Carl Kieke
Special to the Reporter-News

There are two items I want to cover this week.

One involves students in eighth grade through high school who need to know how to make an impression during a job interview. The other is for any age with one common interest: Fishing. And if you are also interested in helping out Boy Scouts of America, that’s a double plus.

An interview training workshop will be held Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Taylor County AgriLife Extension office at the West Texas Fairgrounds. It is open to any student living in Taylor, Jones, Callahan, Shackelford or Nolan counties.

The event is being presented by 4-H, but is open to all students. There is no charge, but pre-registration is requested by contacting the Extension office in your home county as soon as possible.

Perhaps a bit more fun (but requires getting up before the chickens) is the Hooked on Scouting bass tournament fundraiser scheduled for Aug. 27 at Hubbard Creek Lake.

This team tournament begins with check-in beginning at 5 a.m. at Bob Clark Landing, on the west side of the lake at Highway 180. Entry fee for a two-person team is $160, with sponsorship levels at $1,000 and $2,500 for four-person teams. The tournament begins with flighted starts at 6 a.m. Weigh-in and awards will be at 3 p.m. at the Bob Clark Landing boat ramp.

Register at the Texas Trails Council office, 3811 N. First St. in Abilene; or online at texastrailsbsa.com. The registration link is on the left side of the page in the list of upcoming events near the bottom of the page.

This fundraiser will help boys and girls beginning at kindergarten age to have a fun program for another year. It helps the council keep two camps available and pay expenses for numerous events through the year, including Cuborees for Cub Scouts, camporees for older Scouts, Haunted Forest, Pinewood Derby and many more.

Texas Trails Council covers most of our readership area, from Roby, Rotan and Sweetwater to Eastland and Comanche, and from Haskell and Breckenridge to Winters, Goldthwaite and Lampasas (Ballinger and points south and west are served from San Angelo).
