We breakdown the latest key news on college football recruiting, including a busy week for Notre Dame football and the latest on elite QBs in 2023 and 2024.

Alabama has been surging in the 2023 college football recruiting rankings, but Notre Dame football landed three verbal commitments this week, putting them back into the top spot.

Jaiden Ausberry, a borderline top-100 recruit at linebacker, was the highest-ranked of the three commitments for Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame football this week. But maybe the most important was Dylan Edwards, a running back out of Kansas because his commitment was decided just recently.

Edwards committed to Kansas State last month. He’s close friends with four-star QB Avery Johnson, who is the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas and committed to the Wildcats.

Yet, after the Irish missed on some other running backs, they extended an offer to Edwards recently, and basically on the same day, he re-opened his recruitment.

Notre Dame football finished off the flip on Saturday but adds yet another 4-star prospect to the 2023 class which has a total of 20. Edwards is one of the lower-ranked commitments as 324th overall but his addition was still key, especially with the running back board shrinking.

The Irish now lead Alabama by less than three points for the No. 1 spot and the Crimson Tide are working to flip five-star EDGE Keon Keeley, while Texas A&M is hoping it can flip top-100 safety Peyton Bowen.

Even if Notre Dame holds those commitments it has 23 right now and Alabama has 18, with a bunch more targets still on the board.

So the Tide are my pick to win the 2023 college football recruiting title, but even if the Irish lose a couple of elite talents, they are going to have a blue-chip ratio of higher than 80 percent and it’s really hard to do that.

That’s how you compete for national titles and that’s what the Irish are setting themselves up to do, especially with a five-star QB commitment in 2024 (CJ Carr).
