A special summer camp returned to west Michigan for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dozens of motorcyclists and more than 20 fire departments escorted campers to the Great Lakes Burn Camp for Kids in a parade on Sunday.
The week-long retreat is for children who have survived a burn-related injury.
Burn survivor and former camper Lauren Chishlom said she is grateful for the entire community that make the parade and camp possible for the kids.
Chishlom is now a lifeguard at the camp.
"It makes me cry honestly when we get into the parade and I see people lined up, it’s a sense of love," Chishlom said.
The campers left from Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo headed to Pretty Lake Camp in Mattawan.
Nearly four dozen kids from across Michigan and out of state were attending camp this year where they swim, do arts and crafts, play outdoor games, have campfires and cookouts.
"They’ll be in school and get teased and bullied even in public but they can come to camp and not have to worry about any of that," said Mike Longenecker, executive director of Great Lakes Burn Camp.
Instructors said it’s a great way for the kids to meet other children just like them to build self-esteem in a safe and comfortable environment.
"That’s what this is all about, them being confident with who they are and truly loving themselves," Chishlom said. "Camp formed me honestly into the person I am today and made me realize I'm not alone."
According to the camp's website, due to generous donations there is no charge for campers to attend.
The kids will spend all week on the lake and head home Friday.
