PARKMAN, Ohio — A 33-year-old man is dead and his 9-year-old son injured after their horse and buggy were struck by a car late Saturday afternoon in Geauga County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Stephen Hostetler, of Garrettsville, was guiding the horse-drawn buggy westbound along U.S. Route 422 in Parkman Township near State Route 282. The boy was beside him in the passenger's seat when the buggy was hit from behind by a Hyundai Elantra just after 5:30 p.m.

Both father and son were sent flying from the buggy, and the elder Hostetler died from his injuries on impact. The child was rushed to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center with what are being called serious injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 34-year-old Warren man, was not hurt in the crash. Officials have not indicated if charges will be filed, but did confirm alcohol did not play a role in the collision.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
