PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Public Utility Commission announced last week that the Philadelphia suburbs will be getting a new area code next month, because 6-1-0 and 4-8-4 are running out of numbers.

8-3-5 is the new area code for Delaware, Chester and parts of Montgomery counties. If history serves as a guide, it will take a while to get used to recognizing it as a local number and it will never have any cachet.

Area codes can be iconic. In Southern California, they’re printed on t-shirts and even serve as tattoos. Manhattan residents consider 2-1-2 so essential, they buy it on eBay if they can’t get it from their cell provider.

2-1-5 may never command that level of prestige, but it gets respect as the original Philadelphia area code.

8-3-5 is fated to forever mark its owner as a newbie.

But on the bright side, it presents a new opportunity to get the last seven digits of your dreams.

Like 835-867-5309 — that could work.
