Northampton County man tried to kill girlfriend’s ex-husband, State Police say

A Northampton County man is accused of attempting to kill his girlfriend’s ex-husband Saturday night outside a Carbon County bar, according to State Police.

Leonid Opacic, 40, of Walnutport, is charged with one felony count of attempted homicide and two felony counts of aggravated assault, along with making terroristic threats and other offenses, police said. They allege Opacic shot at the victim after the two were kicked out of Rausch House Bar in Palmerton.

The shooting happened about 10:45 p.m., police said.

Police allege that Opacic grabbed a Taurus 9mm handgun from his vehicle and shot at the victim twice, after getting removed from the bar.

A nearby off-duty police officer and bystanders managed to intervene and keep the victim from being shot by Opacic, police said.

Police said they collected surveillance video of the incident and continue to investigate.

According to police, Opacic and the victim were involved in several altercations throughout the week related to Opacic’s relationship with the victim’s ex-wife.

Opacic was arraigned before Judge William J. Kissner on Sunday morning. He is being held in Carbon County Jail on 10% of 150,000 bail, according to court documents.

An attorney for Opacic was not listed.

A preliminary hearing for Opacic is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 17 before Kissner to determine if there is sufficient evidence to send the charges to trial in Carbon County Court.
