It goes without saying that whomever takes the snaps for the Liberty Flames this fall will be stepping into some big shoes.
While Malik Willis battles in the Tennessee Titans training camp, a full quarterback room now faces a competition in training camp, with coach Hugh Freeze looking to see who will emerge as the leader.
Redshirt junior Jonathan Bennett backed up Malik Willis last season, giving him a presumed edge in experience. However, the Flames QB room features plenty of talent, including Utah transfer Charlie Brewer. Add in former 3-star product Nate Hampton, and a 4-star QB in Kaidon Salter, who transferred from Tennessee, along with sophomores Sean Brown and Zak Burnett, and Freeze, alongside quarterbacks coach Kent Austin, have a lot to consider.
Even with the pressure of picking a new quarterback, Freeze said the pressure isn't on him, but rather, on his young QB's to prove they belong, saying "Anytime you create competition, it's beneficial. The kids that are able to handle that, and raise their level of play, are the ones you want to go to battle with."
With camp just starting, Freeze added that, so far, his room has responded well to the competition, hoping the time sharpens their skills and makes a leader emerge. "You're gonna carry four or five scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, and you've got to compete every year to earn that spot. All the ones in that room have shown signs that they're willing to compete for it."
Fans shouldn't expect a decision anytime soon, however, with coach Freeze stating the battle could go right up until Liberty's week one trip to Southern Miss on September 3rd.
