Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw gets epidural shot; still no timetable for return

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day injured list on Friday with lower back pain, a day after exiting his start against the San Francisco Giants after just four innings.

On Saturday, manager Dave Roberts provided an update on the three-time Cy Young winner's status.

Roberts said that Kershaw was still sore after receiving an epidural injection on Friday and wasn't sure when the nine-time All-Star would pick up a baseball again.

"He did get an epidural, so that's going to take a couple of days to kind of settle in," Roberts told reporters on Saturday. "Once that soreness dissipates, then I think we'll know more."

Roberts added that an MRI didn't show anything different from tests given to Kershaw earlier this season while he dealt with inflammation in his pelvic joint.

The 34-year-old is 7-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 15 starts for the Dodgers this season.

The Dodgers are cruising atop the NL West, which should allow Kershaw plenty of time to rest his back.

Ahead of Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers boasted the best record in MLB (73-33), having won six in a row and nine of their last 10 games.
