FedEx driver befriends Des Moines 2-year-old through art
HE RAN OUT AND HE KNEW RIGHT AWAY IT WAS FOR HIM. HENRY’S PACKAGE. HENRY’S LITTLE PACKAGE IS WHAT HE SAID. NO. SIX TONIGHT, TWO UNLIKELY FRIENDS MET FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY AFTER ADMIRING EACH OTHER’S WORK FROM AFAR. TONIGHT, KCCI AS BEAU BOWMAN INTRODUCES US TO HENRY AND ROBERT, BOTH HAVE A KNACK FOR ART. POP. TWO YEAR OLD HENRY WATSON LOVES TO PAINT ROCKS. IN THE BEGINNING, IT DOESN’T. HE WILL BE RARE. RED PAINT, BLUE PAINT. IT DOESN’T SEEM TO MATTER. THE MASTERPIECES SET ON DISPLAY WITH THE OTHERS IN HENRY’S STREET SIDE ART GALLERY. AND AS IT TURNS OUT, HENRY HAS A FAN. DAY IN, DAY OUT. THIS IS MY ROUTE IN EAST VILLAGE. ROBERT SINCLAIR IS THE FEDEX DRIVER IN HENRY’S NEIGHBORHOOD. HE SEES THE ROCK COLLECTION EVERY DAY DELIVERING PACKAGES ON HENRY STREET, SOMETHING HE SAYS ALWAYS MAKES HIM SMILE. I KNEW THE ROCKS. I SEEN THE ROCKS OUT HERE QUITE A BIT WHEN I’M AROUND EVERY DAY. LET’S SEE IF YOU CAN. BUT LITTLE DID ROBERT KNOW HENRY IS A FAN OF HIS WORKING TOO. IT’S BECOME A ROUTINE IN THE WATSON HOUSEHOLD. WHENEVER A PACKAGE COMES IN THE MAIL, HENRY GETS TO SHOW OFF HIS MUSCLES. OH, IT’S JUST ROLLS. PERFECT WORK. THE TWO HAD NEVER MET UNTIL ONE OF THOSE PACKAGED SHOES CAME IN A SPECIAL DELIVERY IN THE BACK. A POP THEY PAINTED A ROCK AND THEY PUT IT ON THERE LIKE OUR PAINTED ROCKS OUTSIDE. AND WE ALL SORT OF REALIZED AT THE SAME TIME THAT THIS IS REALLY, REALLY NICE. FEDEX DRIVER HAD COME. HE DIDN’T EVEN HAVE A PACKAGE TO DELIVER AND HE HAD PAINTED THIS RACK JUST LIKE HENRY’S AT IRAQ AND LEFT IT THERE FOR HIM TO GO GET. AND IT JUST MADE HIS DAY. HE RAN OUT AND HE KNEW RIGHT AWAY IT WAS FOR HIM. HENRY’S PACKAGE, HENRY’S LITTLE PACKAGE IS WHAT HE SAID IT PACKAGE. OKAY, LET’S PAINT. I’M A FATHER TO KIDS, TOO. I KNOW A LITTLE THING THAT MAKES KIDS SMILE FOR THE DAY, SO I FIGURED I’D KIND OF MAKE HIS DAY, AND I OPENED THE DOOR ON THE FEDEX ROCK NOW SITS PROUDLY ON THE WATSONS PORCH, WHICH IS NOW BECOME AN ART STUDIO. CAN YOU GET IT FOR THE TWO NEW FRIENDS TO PAINT TOGETHER? ARE WE DONE? YOU CAN PUT THAT ROCK AWAY. BEAU BOWMAN. KCCI 8 NEWS. I WAS NEWS-LEADER. HOW CAN YOU NOT SMILE WHEN YOU WATCH THAT STORY? Two-year-old Henry Wasson loves to paint rocks. Red paint, blue paint — doesn't seem to matter. The masterpieces are set on display in Henry's street-side art gallery. And as it turns out, Henry has a fan."Day in and day out, this is my route in the East Village," FedEx Ground driver Robert Sinclair said. He sees the rock collection every day delivering packages on Henry's street. "I knew the rocks, I've seen the rocks out here quite a bit when I'm out here every day," Sinclair said.But little did he know, Henry is a fan of his work too.It's become a routine in the Wasson household, whenever a package comes in the mail, Henry gets to show off his muscles and haul in the delivery from the porch.The two had never met, until one of those packages came in a special delivery."We all sort of realized at the same time that this really, really nice FedEx driver had come, he didn't even have a package to deliver, and he had painted this rock just like Henry's rocks and left it there for him to go get," Henry's mother, Laura Wasson, said."It just made his day, he ran out and knew right away it was for him. 'Henry's package, Henry's little package,' is what he said," Henry's father, Conner Wasson, said. "I'm a father to kids, too. I know little things that make kids smile through the day so I figured I kind of make his day by painting his rock," Sinclair said. The FedEx rock now sits proudly on the Wasson's porch, which has now become an art studio for the two new friends to paint together.
