TWU’s dining refresh for fall promises more flavor, better options

Aug. 5, 2022 — DENTON — While some things stay the same, others change, and several new dining retail options promise something for everyone this upcoming fall semester at Texas Woman’s University.

After a cosmetic refresh, Mondo Subs will replace the old Which Wich in CFO. It’s billed as an affordable sub sandwich option. While it will not offer salads, there will be soup and sides, including cookies and chips. Students can get their subs toasted or cold, and the bread is baked fresh daily. Prices for 6-inch subs are $3.99-$6.99, and 12-inch subs are $7.99-$12.99. Opening specials will include a coupon for a free cookie on your first visit, and watch for other opportunities to win lunch for a week! 

In addition to Mondo Subs, Denton Eats will replace Community Choice in the Student Union at Hubbard Hall (SUHH). The new concept is an adventure in local flavor, featuring three local foodie options that will rotate in and out throughout the course of the fall semester. Smackin Mac and Juicy Pig will kick off the year with Rusty Taco making an appearance, starting in October.

Smackin Mac started as a food truck in 2019 after owner Frances Juru just had a baby, but her business grew quickly, and she won the top food vendor prize at the North Texas Fair & Rodeo by 2021 for her gourmet mac and cheese creations. According to an interview with DFW Child, her original Smackin Mac combines a blend of cheddar, jack, sharp and mozzarella cheeses, as well as her own secret seasoning. She also offers the smoked brisket and barbecue sauce mac, bacon gouda mac, a hot dog topped with mac, and a very popular mac and cheese grilled cheese.

Juicy Pig has been a local favorite since its humble beginnings in 2015, and offers barbecue for everyone—including the vegetarians with its smoked jackfruit. From specialty sandwiches to authentic Texas offerings like brisket and sausage, you can satisfy your barbecue cravings. And lucky for us, if they don’t bring their entire menu to the on-campus location, their restaurant is just a short walk down Locust Street. 

Rusty Taco has been around since 2010 when its first location opened in Dallas. Inspired by family trips to Mexico, this homegrown mini-chain is committed to providing fresh, simple tacos that pack a punch of flavor. The Denton location, found on Hickory Street, is often proclaimed “the best tacos in Denton.” 

Community Choice will move to the Dining Hall and will occupy the “innovate station.” More information will be forthcoming after Chef Kolton determines the final menu.

While the details are still being worked out, Starbucks is scheduled for a cosmetic refresh that may impact the start of the semester, but if the location in the Library shuts down, there will be a temporary kiosk available in SUHH.
