Three deaths, 333 new COVID-19 cases reported on Cape and Islands

There were 9,646 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing the total number of cases to 1,813,037 since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.  

In their weekly report, state officials also noted 938 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 164,466.  

As of Aug. 3, 144 patients were primarily hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses and 560 total patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the DPH reported.

Fifty-seven patients were in the intensive care units, or ICUs, and 15 patients were intubated.

Closer to home, in Thursday's weekly report, DPH officials said Barnstable County posted 303 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 42,093 since the pandemic started. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) had 20 new coronavirus cases, for a total to date of 4,032. Nantucket County reported 10 new cases, for a total of 3,661. 

The Cape and Islands saw similar numbers in last week's report, which had five deaths and 385 new Covid-19 cases.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate was 7.97%. Barnstable County came in at 9.87%, and Dukes and Nantucket’s 14-day positivity rate was 8.36%.  

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 16 patients with coronavirus. No patients were in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported eight patients, with no patients in the ICU. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital or Nantucket Cottage Hospital had no patients with coronavirus.

DPH officials said Thursday there were 41 new deaths statewide among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 19,939 since the pandemic began.   

There were seven deaths statewide from probable cases of COVID-19. The number of deaths from probable cases is 1,285 in Massachusetts.  

Barnstable County had three new deaths, the DPH reported. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 is 624 in Barnstable County. There were no new deaths in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 20 since the pandemic began in March 2020.     

The two-week COVID-19 case count, total case count and 14-day testing positivity rate for Cape Cod towns follows:
