Man charged in shooting during Johnson County football scrimmage game

A Dublin man was arrested and charged for firing shots into the air during the scrimmage game.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ga. — Joshua Jerome Russell was arrested and charged in connection to a shooting during a Johnson County football scrimmage game on Friday night, according to a release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. 

Russell allegedly fired shots into the air on Herschel Walker Drive in Wrightsville, just outside Lovett Stadium where a scrimmage game was happening.

There was a large crowd at the event and approximately 100 high school football players, coaches, band members, cheerleaders, and other staff were on the field of play. 

School officials secured the field and escorted players and coaches off of it.

Law enforcement officials, along with school security, saw the man shooting and were able to take him into custody. 

The 27-year-old Dublin man was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault (multiple counts), felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime (multiple counts), felony reckless conduct, felony cruelty to children (1st degree), felony carrying a weapon within a school zone, discharging a firearm near a highway or street, criminal attempt to commit a felony, inciting a riot, and several traffic violations.

This case remains under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and anyone with additional information can call Detective Sergeant Raymond Garner at 478-864-4003.
