It's open today. The much-anticipated Hobby Lobby craft-and-decor store opened its doors on Friday, Aug. 5.
It's the first store, and meant to be an anchor, for the new Osage Commons shopping center in Osage Beach. The complex sits on the former site of the Happy Fisherman restaurant and Golden Door motel (and long before that, the legendary Aquarama mermaid show.) The site is being developed by the Staenberg Group, who obtained a TIF agreement from Osage Beach to help with project funding.
The city approved the project TIF in the summer of 2017. Demolition of the buildings took place shortly thereafter, but the site sat quiet for some time. Then construction began in 2021, with enormous amounts of material being brought in to fill up the valley that tapered toward Highway 54. Now the orange Hobby Lobby sign greets drivers along the highway, as well as on Osage Beach Parkway, where the entrance to the shopping center sits. Developers have not announced any other retailers for the center, yet.
Another popular store is showing significant construction progress, just outside Osage Beach: Aldi. An opening date for the popular discount grocery store has not been announced, but the company told LakeExpo earlier this year that they planned to open the doors before the end of 2022.
