The night of July 3 completely changed the life of a family traveling through Nebraska from Wisconsin to Colorado.
Ten-year old Ben Prince died after the ceiling above the swimming pool at the Hampton Inn in York, where his family was staying, collapsed on top of him. The issue is that there is no one investigating this case.
The Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Spokeswoman Regina Shields told NTV News they only investigate fire and explosions. She confirmed the Fire Marshal's office was on scene to investigate fire and safety issues within the rest of the building and determined there were none.
York City Administrator Sue Crawford said the police aren't investigating further as this is not a criminal investigation. She added the city's building inspectors aren't looking into the collapse either as they don't investigate problems after a building is issued an occupancy permit.
"There is no state entity in the state of Nebraska that is authorized to investigate building collapses," Crawford said. "I anticipate that there will be civil investigations. It is the case that attorneys or investigators could be working with the family to investigate through records."
NTV News tried to contact the hotel's management, but they are not talking about the issue. We also tried contacting the York Police Department with no luck.
“We get this is a terrible tragedy, and we send all of our condolences to the family," Crawford said.
