An Iowa family popular for selling sweet corn is dealing with a tragedy
HAPPENED. MARCUS JAMES, KEVIN’S DAUGHTER SIERRA, DISPLAYING ICE, WAS LIFTED TO IOWA METHODIST MEDICAL CENTER. SHE WAS TAKING A LOAD OF CORN TO FORT DODGE WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. SHE WAS DRIVING WESTBOUND NEAR WOODWARD ON HIGHWAY 141. KEVIN, THIS BLANKS IS TRYING TO DISTRACT HIMSELF WITH WORK AT THE FAMILY SWEET CORN STAND ON 13TH AND GRAND IN AMES. THOUGHTS OF HIS DAUGHTER SIERRA ARE NEVER FAR FROM HIS MIND. AND ALL WE CAN DO IS PRAY FOR KEVIN IS AWAY FROM HIS DAUGHTER. SIERRA’S BEDSIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE MONDAY MORNING. HE WAS NOT READY TO SEE HIS DAUGHTER IN HER HOSPITAL BED AT THE CRITICAL CARE UNIT AT IOWA METHODIST MEDICAL CENTER. IT WAS VERY DEVASTATING TO SEE MY DAUGHTER IN THAT CONDITION. THREE SKULL FRACTURES, A BROKEN JAW, NUMEROUS LACERATIONS AND IS IN A MEDICALLY INDUCED COMA. IT’S GOING TO BE A VERY LONG HEALING PROCESS POSSIBLY, SHE MIGHT LOSE SOME OF HER HEARING AND SOME OF HER VISION AND HER MOTOR SKILLS MIGHT BE VERY, VERY AFFECTED. HE STILL PICTURES THE GIRL WHO CAN LIGHT UP A ROOM, WRITES POETRY SONGS, IS ALWAYS GOT A SMILE ON HER FACE. THE FAMILY HAS RUN THE SWEET CORN STAND IN AMES FOR 24 SUMMERS, 22 YEAR OLD SIERRA STARTED WORKING IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS WHEN SHE WAS 14. SHE WAS TAKING A LOAD OF CORN TO FORT DODGE WHEN SHE CRASHED WESTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 141 RIGHT BEFORE WOODWARD, THERE WAS A BIG TURN THERE AND SHE DROPPED THE WHEEL OFF INTO THE GRAVEL IN OVERCORRECTED AND LOST CONTROL, WENT INTO THE MEDIUM AND FLIPPED HER TRUCK. SIERRA WAS EJECTED FROM THE TRUCK SHE WAS DRIVING. KEVIN SAYS HE DOESN’T KNOW WHY, BUT SIERRA WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT. HE DOES NOT WANT ANYONE TO HAVE TO FEEL THE PAIN HE AND HIS FAMILY ARE CURRENTLY FEELING. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT SOMETIMES WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT, ALL I CAN SAY IS PUT IT ON. An Iowa family popular for selling sweet corn is dealing with a tragedy
The sweet corn stand on 13th and Grand in Ames has been in the DesPlanques family for decades.Friday morning, it was a welcome distraction for Kevin DesPlanques.It is the first time he has been not been beside his daughter Sierra's hospital bed in the critical care unit at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Monday morning, his 22-year-old daughter Sierra was involved in a single-vehicle crash. "All we can do is pray for her," Kevin DesPlanques said.Sierra has worked in the family sweet corn business since she was 14.She was delivering a truckload of corn to Fort Dodge when she crashed on Highway 141 near Woodward."There is a big turn there. She dropped a wheel into the gravel. Lost control. Went into the median and flipped her truck," Kevin DesPlanques said.Sierra is in a medically induced coma with three skull fractures, a broken jaw and numerous lacerations."It's going to be a very long healing process," Kevin DesPlanques said.There is a GoFundMe set up in Sierra DesPlanques' name to help with medical expenses.All the money raised from the Ames sweet corn stand this weekend will also go toward Sierra's medical expenses.
