Police did not say whether they suspected Irving of intentionally running into people or whether they think he was impaired and unaware they were there.

Videos taken by bystanders showed a large brown sports utility vehicle drive at high speed through the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial parade as dancers and onlookers scattered.

Police and city officials did not immediately respond to request for additional comment.

Photos from local journlaist Sharon Chischilly show the aftermath, with law enforcement officers on the scene and emergency medical personnel treating the injured.

During the parade, Gallup Police officers received a report of multiple people drinking alcohol in a vehicle parked near the parade route, according to a statement from the City of Gallup.

When officers made contact, the driver pulled away, striking 'officers, pedestrians, vehicles and a business.' Two passengers in the car with Irving have not been charged.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and his family were among those almost hit as a large SUV drove through a Native American parade in western New Mexico, causing multiple injuries.

Nez said the vehicle was coming at him and a group of tribal officials who were walking in the parade. He thanked people for their quick action.

'We just ask for your prayers for all of the participants,' Nez said in a video posted on social media.

'We're all shook up. You would see this on television, you would think it would never happen here. I'm sorry to say it happened here in Gallup, New Mexico.'

'The Navajo Nation stands with resilience against any acts of violence and sends prayers of protection to those affected,' they said in a statement on Facebook.

'This was a traumatic and triggering event for many, especially for our youth, elders, and our veterans who acted quickly.'

Hundreds of people were enjoying the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Centennial Celebration, an 11-day event celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The event website describes it as Native American & Indigenous Tribal Processions & Performance Showcases, with events such as rodeos, pageants, Navajo song and dance and a 5km run.
