Six candidates vie for Jim Thorpe council seat

Six candidates are in the running to fill a vacant Jim Thorpe Borough Council seat when the governing body meets Thursday.

At a workshop meeting this week, the list of candidates was released including Jay Miller, Clem McGinley, John McGuire, James Dougher, Andrew Roberts and Sydney Wernett.

The vacancy was created last month when Councilman Kyle Sheckler resigned, citing an inability to find the time needed to continue in the role.

“This is definitely not something you like to have to do as a council,” Council President Greg Strubinger said during Thursday’s workshop. “You’d rather see it decided during an election, but it is something we’re tasked with.”

Sheckler’s current council term runs through the end of 2023.

While none of the candidates were discussed specifically Thursday, Councilman Bob Schaninger said he’d like to see if each person intends on running again when the term is up next year.

“If they aren’t then they’ll only be here a very short time,” Schaninger said. “I’d like to see someone who is hoping to be around.”

Strubinger said council historically hasn’t interviewed candidates, but it didn’t mean that couldn’t change.

“In the past we felt that may deter some people from applying for the position,” he said.

Council members will have the opportunity to nominate a candidate of their choice Thursday. Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said the first candidate to receive a majority approval from council, four votes in this case, will win the seat.
