Marengo County sees proficiency increases at county schools

The Marengo County Board of Education heard a report on test scores from its three county schools Sweet Water, Marengo, and AL Johnson at the July 28 meeting.

Sixty-one students in Marengo County were assessed and 38 students tested on or above grade level proficiency, with 28 scoring below proficiency. The overall proficiency rate was 63.2 percent.

Marengo County increased the percentage of students scoring at levels three and four in four out of seven grades tested for reading. In math compared to previous test scores in 2020-2021, the county increased the percentage of students scoring in levels three and four out of the six grade levels that were tested.

At Marengo High School, 16 students were tested with 10 scoring at or above grade level proficiency for a total of 62.5 percent A.L. Johnson High School had 11 third-grade students tested with 4 testing at or above proficiency, and 7 scoring below grade level proficiency. Sweet Water had a proficiency percentage of 70.59 percent with 24 out of 34 students testing at or above grade level.

College and Career Readiness data was also presented at the meeting showed positive increases. As a district, Marengo County increased the number of students who are college and career ready from 73 percent in 2020 to 74.3 percent. A.L. Johnson increased their CCR from 56 percent to 80 percent. MHS showed a decrease in CCR from 82 percent to 32 percent. The reason for the drop was due to a decrease in dual enrollment where students either did not pass the courses or did not finish and were required to sit out a semester before they retake the course.
