HUBBARD TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – Hubbard Township police arrested a suspect wanted for two robberies Friday morning in Mercer County, one of which resulted in the stabbing of a victim.

Hubbard Township Police Chief Ronald Fusco said a BOLO went out for 48-year-old Jason Riley, of Sharon, the suspect accused of robberies at the Dollar Tree in Hermitage and at the Walmart in Hempfield Township on Friday morning. One of his officers spotted him around 9 a.m. in a vehicle at Truck World, where he was arrested.

The robbery at the Dollar Tree on E. State Street happened just after 5 a.m. Friday.

According to Hermitage Police Chief Eric Jewell, Riley had followed the victim, a 37-year-old Sharon woman, from the Speedway in Sharon. The victim said Riley grabbed her from behind, held a screwdriver to her side and demanded money. She said he told her not to scream or else he would stab her. Police said Riley then stole her purse and drove away.

Riley is charged with robbery and theft by unlawful taking for that incident.

Fusco said a screwdriver was also used in the robbery at the Walmart in Hempfield Township and that the victim had been stabbed with it several times. WKBN reached out to Hempfield police for more information but hasn’t heard back.

A viewer reported that crime scene tape was up in the parking lot of the Walmart store Friday morning. A spokesperson for Walmart would not provide any information on the incident, referring WKBN to police.

At the time of the alleged crimes, a warrant was also out for the arrest of Riley on a misdemeanor theft charge out of Boardman. That crime happened on July 19, 2020, according to court records.

Riley is currently being held in the Trumbull County Jail. He will be handed over in Pennsylvania to answer to the Mercer County charges.
