Call for armed assault leads to fentanyl, cocaine bust in Bethlehem home

A Bethlehem man accused of assault with a firearm is now facing drug charges related to fentanyl and cocaine found in a city home.

Trai Kaufmann, of the 500 block of Broadway, was arrested May 28 following the alleged assault, and has been held in lieu of $125,000 bail in Northampton County Prison on charges including aggravated assault.

On Tuesday, prosecutors filed a second set of charges against the 45-year-old Kaufmann, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, fentanyl and MDMA. His bail in the second case was set at $150,000.

City police were called by the victim in the early morning of May 28, when she reported being assaulted by Kaufmann at his apartment on Broadway, according to court records.

The woman alleged a firearm and a BB gun were used during the assault.

Kaufmann was arrested that day in the 700 block of Wyandotte Street, but did not have a firearm or BB gun on him at the time of his arrest, police said. Kaufmann’s criminal record precludes him from legally possessing a firearm, and police sought a search warrant for his apartment.

A warrant was granted, and police said they found $52,000 in cash and drugs in the home, including 10 loose grams and 210 packets of fentanyl, 19 lose grams and 73 baggies of cocaine, and 301 MDMA pills.

Kaufmann’s preliminary hearing on the drug charges is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 16.

In the assault case, following a preliminary hearing on July 20, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment charges were forwarded to county court. His formal arraignment in that case is scheduled for October.

Kaufmann’s attorney in the assault case declined to comment.
