Friday’s cool and slightly cloudy morning will quickly clear to a sunny afternoon featuring temperatures typical of early August. But the weekend is looking hot.
As the upper ridge from the desert southwest continues to move northward, Portland will get one more pleasant day before the real heat arrives. Highs Friday should be near 84 degrees.
The heat up begins Saturday. Under sunny skies, temperatures will likely climb to about 92 degrees.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday. Temperatures through that period may reach as high as 102 degrees. Overnight lows will be warm as well with temps likely to stay in the mid 60s to low 70s.
The heat advisory covers the greater Portland area, the upper Hood River Valley, and the west and central portion of the Columbia River Gorge.
Forecast models are currently showing a 50% chance of Portland seeing temperatures in the 100s Sunday.
A change in wind direction and the development of a stronger offshore flow may allow smoke from Oregon wildfires to move westward. This would mostly effect Lane County areas and may block the sun’s rays enough to cool the southern valley a few degrees Sunday and Monday.
Portland’s heat continues Monday when temperatures are expected to reach about 94 degrees.
Unlike the last heat wave, this hot period is unlikely to last beyond Monday. Current long-range forecasts are showing temperatures dipping back into the 80s by Tuesday of next week.
