8th person dies from head-on crash in Illinois that killed 5 children, police say

The death toll from a head-on crash in Illinois last weekend has risen to eight after state police confirmed Wednesday that one of the drivers has died.

Thomas Dobosz, 32, was hospitalized following the collision early Sunday morning, and has since died from his injuries, Illinois State Police said in an update.

The six passengers in his car — wife Lauren Dobosz, 31, and five children ranging in age from 5 to 13 — were previously pronounced dead at the scene by officials, as was the driver of the other vehicle, 22-year-old Jennifer Fernandez.

The crash occurred a little after 2 a.m. local time, when Fernandez’s Acura TSX, which was driving the wrong way, collided with the front of Dobosz’s full-size van on Interstate 90 in McHenry County, state police said.

Authorities say it’s unknown why the Acura was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, and say both cars became “engulfed in flames” when they crashed.

Thomas Dobosz was airlifted to a nearby hospital with “serious injuries” and later died at the medical center, according to police. Officials haven’t publicly identified the children killed in the incident.

McHenry County is about 55 miles northwest of Chicago.
