SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz assistant coach Alex Jensen is getting a temporary new title: USA Basketball head coach.

USA Basketball announced Thursday that Jensen will coach the 2022 USA Basketball AmeriCup Team, which is set to compete at the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup September in Brazil.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity to coach the 2022 USA AmeriCup Team and look forward to working with Mike and Steve as well as a talented group of players," Jensen said. "I always enjoy my time with USA Basketball and am excited to be selected for my first head coaching assignment."

Jensen, a former University of Utah standout, has been an assistant coach with Utah since the 2013-14 and is expected to remain with the Jazz under new head coach Will Hardy. He was Quin Snyder's lead assistant over the last two seasons.

This won't be Jensen's first experience coaching for the United States. The Utah native was a court coach at the 2018 USA Men's National Team minicamp in advance of the 2018 FIBA World Cup. He has has other international coaching experience, too, having served as an assistant with the German National Team at the 2015 EuroBasket.

Jensen will be assisted by G-League head coach Mike Williams and former Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski.

"Alex, Mike and Steve have extensive and diverse coaching backgrounds that will benefit our AmeriCup team as they prepare to face tough FIBA Americas competition in Brazil," USA Basketball Men's National Team director Sean Ford said in a statement. "Accepting a USA Basketball coaching assignment requires time, energy and expertise, and we are grateful to each of these coaches for making this commitment."

The 2022 USA AmeriCup Team will be announced prior to training camp, which is set for Aug. 23-27, in Las Vegas. The USA will compete in Group C and face Mexico in their opening game on Sept. 2.

The USA has won seven gold medals and one silver medal since the event's inception in 1980.
