If there was one area that Evan Roberts wanted to see the Mets do more with at the trade deadline, it was addressing the lack of depth in the bullpen.
On Thursday, Evan was able to ask general manager Billy Eppler why the team walked away with only Mychal Givens when the deadline came and went.
“There was a number of relievers,” Eppler said. “We didn’t line up, we lined up on one of them. But we were in the market for those guys. everyone has different price points and evaluations on players…we put pieces in play and ultimately there were other teams, they valued the player from a different team or we weren’t willing to yield that price. That’s what we were presented with at that moment in time.”
As to what could be next for the Mets bullpen that could seemingly use more reinforcements for late and close games that are sure to come in the playoffs, Eppler thinks there are numerous internal options that can arise as candidates to bridge the gap between the starting rotation and Edwin Diaz.
“I also want to illuminate the fact that Trevor May will be back, and we know Drew Smith will be back,” Eppler said, before he was asked if he was disappointed with only adding one reliever.
“No, I’m not disappointed. Whether they’re brought in from trades or back from the IL or from the minor leagues, contributors are contributors. If we can bring Drew back or Trevor May, who is already back, open up that optionality, maybe it is Megill at some point, maybe a month from now, there is consideration with David Peterson. These are things, we just want to make sure we have that optionality to do that. And I think that exists with this organization.”
