FORSYTH, Ga. (WGXA) -- EMS showed up at a time when the Wiseman family needed them most - but it was a best friend who made all the difference.
Saturday afternoon, North Carolina resident, Abigail Wiseman, was visiting her friend, Courtney Edison, here in Georgia, when something unexpected happened - her water broke.
Husband Joshua says he was shocked when he got the call - the baby was three months early.
"We had no idea this was coming and so we opted to have her do the trip alone to spend some time with her girlfriend hanging out, girls' trip."
Turns out, that girls' trip went from two to three... Now Abby and Joshua have a daughter - Luna.
However, the delivery went down a difficult road, literally.
"Abigail kept saying, you know, that she was having some cramping, and I was like oh, you're probably just dehydrated, or maybe you've overdone it. Maybe it's the heat. Maybe we should just go home and rest."
They tried that, then Courtney got a text:
"She said 'I need you to come up here very quickly'."
Moments later Courtney started driving Abigail to the hospital, but she had to stop.
"She's like, 'you have to throw this car in park! She's coming!' And so we did and I run over to the passenger side and no sooner than I opened the door and she laid back in the seat and contraction - BAM - Her head was out, contraction, her whole body was out and it was as fast as you think it was."
To top it all off, Courtney didn't have any cell service where they were, but eventually, she was able to get her mother to call 911.
Moments later, fire medics arrived who quickly transported little Luna to Spaulding Regional Medical Hospital. Baby Luna weighed in at just 1lb and, 10oz and just 13 inches.
It was an event Captain Ralph Burris lives for.
"I just love helping people."
Joshua is thankful, however he says it's a trip he wished he hadn't missed out on.
"I hated not being there but if I couldn't be there, I'm ok that Courtney was there."
Courtney says she was grateful to help but she says she's not a hero.
"My ultimate goal was to just keep that baby alive."
And she did.
Now the family is calling Luna a miracle for pulling through when the odds were stacked against her.
"For so many reasons, my friend Courtney does not live near a hospital. It was a thirty-minute drive and that was thirty minutes where they didn't have the right equipment."
Wiseman says he knows his daughter will continue to fight.
"It's a miracle she's made it this far and we're trusting that she'll keep on fighting and she will be that living miracle."
