Mary Alice Reporting – To coincide with Ohio’s sales tax exemption on certain items, a supply drive for local teachers is being held at New Towne Mall.

The tax-free weekend runs from August 5th through the 7th and applies to certain items.

These include:

  • An item of clothing priced $75 or less
  • School supplies items priced at $20 or less
  • School instructional material priced at $20 or less.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, items can include most clothing items outside of belt buckles, sports or protective equipment, and costume masks, school supplies account for most traditional back-to-school supplies as well as book bags and lunch boxes. As for the instructional material, this relates to reference books, textbooks, workbooks, reference maps, and globes.

At New Towne Mall, in conjunction with Newsymom and MK Event, a supply drive is happening for teachers. Students, parents, and community members are encouraged to donate supplies that will benefit local teachers, which is happening through August 14th says mall General Manager Tori Noah.

“If you visit New Towne Mall’s Facebook page you’ll also see the event for Tusc for Teachers and there is a whole list of supplies that are needed. We’ll try to keep everybody updated on specific things we’re looking for but, you know, it’s the usual supplies.”

Some of the top essentials for teachers are having Kleenex boxes, assorted batteries, Clorox wipes, a couple of schools said coffee makers, along with other typical items like pens, pencils, folders, dry erase markers, Ziploc bags, and lined notebook paper. The drop-off location inside the mall is by the fountain, inside the B&H Landscaping display.
