A two-car collision in Manhattan early-Wednesday left two pedestrians dead and injured five others, authorities say.
While few details were made available as of late Wednesday morning, preliminary investigation found that two vehicles may have collided head-on near 207th Street on Sherman Avenue in Inwood at around 4 a.m.
One of those vehicles apparently hit some parked cars and pedestrians.
Police say two pedestrians — a 40-year-old man and a 31-year-old man — died. Three of the other five injuries were considered critical. It's unclear if those hurt were drivers or pedestrians.
The other two victims are expected to survive. The investigation is ongoing.
The serious accident came about 30 hours after New York City made its 2,000 automated speed cameras operational 24/7.
City officials argue that nearly 60 percent of traffic fatalities occur overnight and on the weekends, and studies show that speed cameras significantly reduce traffic fatalities. Previously, the cameras were operational only between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays.
It's unclear if speed was a factor in the fatal collision in Inwood.
