A night out turns violent in Fairview.
The Major County Sheriff's Office says two men shot signs around town while backroading. Deputies arrested them on Tuesday.
From checking cattle to hearing gunshots, Amy Pembrook says what happened hit way too close to home.
"It was close enough to us that it really scared us," Pembrook said. "Out here in rural America, you just don't hear things like that going on. How easy would it have been just for a stray bullet to hit the cattle as well? They were gathered around us, and we weren't very far away. It so easily could've gone a different direction, so yes we're very blessed. Every time I think about it, it gets me nervous again."
The sheriff's office says they were notified about a social media post the depicted several people driving around the outskirts of Fairview while shooting a pistol at roadway signs.
"This is rural Oklahoma," Undersheriff Wes Mongold said. "This wouldn't be the first time someone shot at a sign, but it would be the first time that someone shot at a sign and posted it to social media where everyone could see it."
Through open source intelligence, deputies were able to quickly uncover the identities of the individuals responsible.
On Tuesday, deputies executed three search warrants in Fairview with the assistance from the Fairview Police Department. This ultimately led to evidence tying Mark Olsen and Johnathan Olsen to some "very poor decision making."
"When we did locate the vehicle to look for evidence, there was a strong odor of alcohol still inside. Based upon that and the statements made in the social media post, it was very obvious what they were doing."
Both men were released on $10,000 bond. Mark Olsen faces charges of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony and Using a Vehicle to Facilitate the Discharge of a Firearm in Conscious Disregard of Any Other Person.
Johnathan Olsen faces charges of Malicious Injury to Property, Reckless Conduct, Using a Vehicle to Facilitate the Discharge of a Firearm in Conscious Disregard of Any Other Person, and Shooting from a Roadway.
"Poor decision making can often lead to disastrous results. In this case it didn't happen, but it very well could've."
