Dodgers News: Watch Recent Call-Up Miguel Vargas Introduce Himself in Dugout

Amidst a flurry of deals from the Dodgers, LA called up Miguel Vargas, one of their top position player prospects, to keep the active roster whole for the second game of the Giants series in San Francisco.

Vargas has never played in a big league game for the Dodgers, and of course, was all smiles as he walked into the dugout on Tuesday night to introduce himself to his Dodgers teammates.

The Cuban outfielder has steadily climbed through the Dodgers minor league ranks since his first minor league game in 2018. He spent the bulk of 2021 in Double-A, posting a .917 OPS in 367 plate appearances.

This year, Vargas has spent the entire season with the OKC Dodgers (Triple-A) and has put together another sound season. He’s slashing .291/.382/.497 and has logged 15 home runs, 72 RBI, and 11 stolen bases.

Vargas has primarily played the infield during his professional career, but in late June, the Dodgers started giving the 22-year-old some looks in left field.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes discussed Vargas’ potential earlier this summer (quotes via OCR’s Bill Plunkett).

“I think he needs to keep doing what he’s been doing for a while. We feel very strongly about his ability to hit. I think he can roll out of bed and hit.”

Vargas is currently the Dodgers fifth-ranked prospect and earned some high praise for his hitting prowess from MLB Pipeline.

“Vargas is well equipped to accrue more batting championships in the future because he has advanced bat-to-ball skills, understands the mechanics of his right-handed swing, controls the strike zone and hits balls where they’re pitched.”

His defense certainly isn’t his strength, but he could have a future with the Dodgers due to his standout offensive skills.
