SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants, currently playing sub-.500 ball and with a 3-8 record following the All-Star break, have traded catcher Curt Casali and infielder Darin Ruf in separate deals just before Tuesday's MLB trade deadline.

The Giants are 51-52 and in 3rd place behind the 1st-place Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, 18 and 1/2 games back going into Tuesday evening's game against the Dodgers.

Catcher Curt Casali, pitcher Matthew Boyd heading to Seattle

As the 2022 trade deadline fast approached, the Giants traded catcher Curt Casali and left-hander Matthew Boyd to the Seattle Mariners.

According to a tweet from the team, the pair were traded in exchange for RHP prospect Michael Stryffeler and catcher Andy Thomas.

"I had the time of my life with SF. Felt like home and I have so many friendships I'll carry with me for the rest of my life," Casali told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, who confirmed the trade earlier.

Robert Murray of Fansided first reported that the Giants received Stryffeler.

A native of Walnut Creek, Casali joined the Giants for the 2021 season after several seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds. In the 2022 season, Casali played 41 games for San Francisco before being placed on the injured list last month after suffering an oblique strain.

Ruf, who just recently turned 36, is a right-handed bat with some power who can play left field and first base. This season, he's batting .216/.328/.373 with 11 home runs and 90 games. For his career, Ruf owns an OPS+ of 113 and an impressive OPS of .929 against left-handed pitching.

Giants send pitcher Trevor Rosenthal to Brewers

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Trade deadline day continued to be dramatic for the San Francisco Giants as they sent Trevor Rosenthal to the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday.

The Giants said the team was acquiring outfielder Tristan Peters in exchange for Rosenthal.

Rosenthal didn't pitch once for the Giants after he was picked up on July 21 for $4.5 million. He didn't play at all during the 2021 season after undergoing surgery for both thoracic outlet syndrome and a torn labrum in his right hip.
