Josh Heupel has been relentless in adding offensive talent to his roster. Whether it’s been through recruiting or the transfer portal, the Tennessee head coach has made sure to get as many weapons on the field for quarterback Hendon Hooker this season. One of the top ones was former USC wide receiver Bru McCoy, who was on the practice field in Knoxville on Monday.

When asked about the progress McCoy has made throughout the summer, Heupel said the wide receiver is completely different than the one that showed up in June. He thinks the mental aspect will be a huge positive for McCoy as well, looking to make an instant impact for the Volunteers.

“Big, strong, long out on the perimeter,” Heupel said. “He’s learning how to play in our offensive system and how to play from the whistle of the previous snap to the next one. For him, I think he gained a much better understanding of that throughout the summer.

“First couple weeks of June so dramatically different than when we got with him in July. He’s a guy that’s played college football and competed at a high level. That maturity is something that’s an advantage for him and coming here and transitioning to our football program.”

More on Bru McCoy, transfer to Tennessee

McCoy is no stranger to the process of the transfer portal. During his high school recruitment, he was split between Texas and USC, before eventually signing with the Trojans. That decision did not last long as he decided to enroll at Texas and go through spring ball. But even then, McCoy went back on his decision and eventually returned to Los Angeles.

Now, he is heading even further east than Austin to play in the SEC with Tennessee. There have been questions regarding his eligibility for the upcoming season but Heupel does not seem too concerned with McCoy getting on the field this year.

“I’ve been in dialogue with the people that we need to,” Heupel said. “Our administration has been on the other side of the coin. We feel good about where that’s going. Bru’s healthy and ready to compete this training camp, so he’ll be involved in everything that we’re doing.”

Between already transferring during his career and an off-the-field issue while at USC, Tennessee will have to work to earn his eligibility. If they are successful, as they seem to think they will be, McCoy will instantly become one of the offense’s top stars.
