The Celtics are taking a look at a former first-round pick in training camp to fill out one of their roster spots. The C’s and Bruno Caboclo agreed to a training camp deal, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Training camp isn’t for a few more weeks, but the Celtics do need bodies there and have some roster spots available. Caboclo also had a solid Summer League showing for the Jazz last month, where he averaged 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in five games.
Caboclo has bounced around the league ever since he was the No. 20 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Raptors. He became known as “two years away from being two years away” when he was drafted, and now, the 26-year-old is just trying to stick in the league. Caboclo has played in 105 career NBA games, seeing action with the Raptors, Kings, Grizzlies and most recently, the Rockets. Caboclo has averaged 4.2 points per game in the league. He most recently played overseas in France and Brazil.
The Celtics are looking to fill three roster spots as they have 12 players under guaranteed contracts, and they inked both two-way slots by signing JD Davison and Mfiondu Kabengele. Boston coach Ime Udoka mentioned they’re looking for the best wing available, so Caboclo has some potential there if he has a solid showing at training camp.
Boston’s looking to get back to the NBA Finals after falling just two wins short of an NBA title. The Celtics have bolstered their depth and look like bonafide title contenders after adding Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari to the team. Of course, the Kevin Durant sweepstakes look like they could throw some chaos into those plans, but there hasn’t been much movement recently.
