Local Bishop gives insight on Pope Francis remarks

EDMONTON, AB - JULY 26: Pope Francis arrives at Commonwealth Stadium to give an open-air mass on July 26, 2022 in Edmonton, Canada. The pope is meeting with Indigenous communities and community leaders in Canada in an effort to reconcile the history of physical and sexual abuse of Indigenous children in the country's Catholic-run residential schools, as detailed in a 2015 Canadian-government-funded commission report. A surprise this weekend for Catholics around the world as Pope Francis announced he may decide to resign due to health issues.

Bishop David Zubik of the Dicocese of Pittsburgh says it's worth noting the Pope has said similar things before.

“I do remember that when he’s been posed to that question in past, he’s also said well this could happen that he could retire as did pope benedict.
I think be it as it is, we should be praying for him, for his health, and also his future” Says Zubik.

Zubik says the Pope--who made the comments while returning from a trip to Canada--has been known to speak freely and that may be the reason behind the remarks.

Just earlier in the month, though, the Pope said the idea of retiring had never entered his mind.
