BOSTON - Regardless of whether the Milwaukee Brewers swing a trade by the Tuesday deadline, they'll be adding a talented pitcher to the mix for their upcoming three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Manager Craig Counsell said Sunday morning in advance of his team's finale against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park that Freddy Peralta's next appearance will be for the Brewers.

"Freddy will join us in Pittsburgh and then we'll figure out what he's doing to do and when," Counsell said. "His next outing will be with us. The when is to be determined."

The right-hander, who has been on the injured list since May 23 with a right shoulder strain, made a total of two minor-league rehab starts for Class AAA Nashville, with the most recent one coming on Friday.

He's posted a 1.69 earned run average and WHIP of 0.94 in a total of 5⅓ innings with eight strikeouts.

"Freddy's rehab has gone very well," said Counsell. "He's been pushing, pushing, pushing and feeling great for a long time now. It's been a successful rehab with some successful outings, so we're excited to get him back."

The Brewers could choose to utilize Peralta out of the bullpen to start. But if he jumps back into the rotation – the team is two regulars down there between Peralta and Adrian Houser – his initial outings would be limited in terms of pitch count as he's not yet fully stretched out.

Peralta, coming off his first all-star season in 2021, is 3-2 with a 4.42 ERA and WHIP of 1.19 in eight starts for the Brewers this season. He's also struck out 50 in 38⅔ innings.
