According to the insurance site, QuoteWizard, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of five, and Oklahoma has the fourth highest rate of child drownings in the country.
Drownings can happen in seconds, and experts say the best way to keep your children safe in the water, is to always be watching them.
"When we look at drownings, what we have found is that it is something that is silent and it is fast and you rarely get a second chance around water," said QuoteWizard, Sr. Research Analyst, Nick VinZant.
According to QuoteWizard, more than 30 people have drowned in Oklahoma pools in the last 3 years, and 52% of them were children,
"The thing about fatal drownings, especially in pools is that while things happen, they are largely preventable, and a lot of that is just by following some pretty simple tips," said VinZant.
Some of the safety tips include getting a fence or barrier around your pool, and having a designated adult to watch children in the water at ALL times,
"Make sure that someone has been designated to watch the children because if everyone is watching everyone, then no one is watching anyone," he said, "Have a plan in place have basic water rescue and CPR skills, and know what to do in case of an emergency."
"Even if there's a lifeguard, even if the child can swim, even if there are floaties, even if there's a raft, that does NOT prevent drowning," VinZant said.
According to VinZant, in 57% of pool fatalities, the child simply went missing,
"The biggest reason that we have found behind child drownings is that the parents simply just lost track of the child and even for a moment it can happen so fast," he said.
VinZant says that if a child goes missing, to always check the water first, and make sure to remove floaties and rafts from the pool, so you have a clear view of the bottom.
