The late chef Anthony Bourdain, a New Yorker through and through, famously said that In-N-Out was his favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. "This is like a ballistic missile ... a perfectly designed protein delivery system,” Bourdain told Eater in 2015 before taking a bite of In-N-Out’s burger. His order? A double-double, animal-style. That’s how you know Bourdain was a real fan and not just an East Coast interloper. 

Like In-N-Out fanatics everywhere, he celebrated the chain’s secret menu, which includes well-known favorites like the neapolitan shake and root beer float. But even In-N-Out devotees might not know about the Flying Dutchman, Roadkill Fries, or the monkey-style burger. So here’s a rundown of the strangest, most hush-hush items you’ll find on In-N-Out’s secret menu.

If you hate vegetables, are a keto adherent, or enjoy clogging your arteries, order the Flying Dutchman at In-N-Out. While we’re not sure what this no-bun burger has to do with a folkloric ghost ship, this secret menu item sure is legendary … even if it looks a bit like roadkill.

Speaking of roadkill, this secret item will appeal to restaurantgoers who want to spruce up their fries with a little extra protein. In-N-Out’s roadkill fries start with an order of fries topped with sauce, cheese, and caramelized onions. Then a bit of crumbled beef patty is added on top. But don’t worry; it’s roadkill-free.

This mountainous, motley mess of food combines an In-N-Out burger with animal-style fries. And unfortunately, it doesn’t exist. Instead, this mythical fast food burger is a product of the internet’s perpetual rumor mill and wild imagination. In-N-Out has even come out and said that they are “unable to prepare” monkey-style burgers for “a variety of reasons.” But what’s stopping you from ordering a burger and animal-style fries separately to create your own monkey-style burger?

The simplest item on the secret menu (and one that happens to be popular among pet owners), the Scooby Snack is a burger patty — and that’s it. Like the Flying Dutchman, it’s not exactly pleasant to look at, but we could definitely see Shaggy and Scoob munching on a few of these in the Mystery Machine.

For big appetites and folks who have a good relationship with their cardiologist, In-N-Out’s 4X4 is a massive burger stuffed with four patties and four slices of cheese. You can also order a 2x2, 3x2, or any other combination, though In-N-Out cuts customers off at 4x4.

Our Take

A healthier alternative to the carb-free Flying Dutchman, the protein-style burger swaps out a bun for crisp leaves of lettuce, making it keto-friendly and gluten-free. The Protein-Style Burger also looks far more appetizing than its roadkill-adjacent cousins, the Flying Dutchman and Roadkill Fries.

Our Take

Bored of the same old burgers? Add a bit of kick and pizzaz by ordering a mustard grilled patty, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. The cook will slather some mustard on one side of your burger before slapping the patty back onto the grill, singing the outside and leaving it with a light mustard exterior. You can’t get that at McDonald’s.
