The Saints' have a new-look secondary, at least on the back-end, but that doesn't mean we know what it will look like.

With the additions of Marcus Maye and Tyrann Mathieu, Dennis Allen has touted the team's new option of "multiplicity" at the safety position. Both Maye and Mathieu can play deep safety and down in the box, and that'll be a major advantage that the former New York Jet is looking forward to implementing.

"It makes it a lot harder to get a read on," Maye said after the first day of Saints training camp. "Different guys do different things so it’s not just one person here, one person there. So it’s going to be good for us to be able to do both."

We've yet to see what that might look like, however, for two different reasons. Maye was rehabbing a torn Achilles throughout OTAs and minicamp, while Mathieu was on the field. Maye nailed his rehab schedule and got on the field as a full participant on Day 1 of camp, but Mathieu was absent due to a family issue.

But the two veterans have already started getting to know each other in meetings and in the locker room, where the Saints placed their lockers side-by-side. Maye said this secondary is well aware of how good they can be, but it'll take off-the-field work along with the time spent on grass to reach that potential.

"Communication is one of the main things," Maye said on WWL. "Knowing where to be, certain areas of the field, situations and things like that. Just being a student of the game is probably the main thing."

But even as one of the newest members of the team, he's already felt welcomed by the city. He could see it from afar, and that environment and winning culture if a big piece of what drew him to New Orleans after spending his first five NFL seasons as a member of the New York Jets.

"Just from the outside looking in, you can see it," Maye said. "The city loves the team and the team loves the city. So I’m excited to be here.”
