Hensley Meulens didn’t make it as a Yankees slugger, but he’s winning the team over as a coach

Hensley Meulens played in just 159 big league games with the Yankees from 1989-93.

And though the 26 homers he hit with Triple-A Columbus in 1990 and again in 1992 gave rise to the memorable nickname “Bam Bam,” he never found a home in The Bronx.

But he’ll be part of Old-Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium for the first time on Saturday. Now an assistant hitting coach for the Yankees, Meulens is searching for the success he never found as a player in the organization.

“It’s great to get back,” said Meulens, now 55. “I have a lot of fond memories with this team. I grew up as a young player here, first as a prospect and then going up and down [to the minors].  I feel like I’ve gone full circle.”
