Yard of the Month

“Heidis” – 30 of them – plus one 9-week-old Cavashon (Cavalier King Charles and Bichon) represent the hydrangeas that are in abundance at 920 Ridge Road., Ashland.

That is what LuAnn LaRue calls her hydrangeas. And the newest member of the family is named Heidi Delight.

Roger and LuAnn LaRue were surprised with $50 Farm and Home Hardware gift certificates July 6 from Art of Gardening Club members Paul Randles, Sally Ahlers and Claudia Dunn. The LaRues were chosen “Yard of the Month” winners.

Mrs. LaRue said she waters her “Heidis” everyday. Blue is her favorite hydrangea color.

The retired couple received a “Yard of the Month” Art of Gardening sign for display in their winning yard. Mrs. LaRue worked in the medical offices field, most recently at Ashland Christian Health Center. Mr. LaRue retired from the City of Ashland as building maintenance supervisor.

Sally Ahlers, the force behind the “Yard of the Month” summer project June-September, noted the front walkway had yellow Lenten roses or Hellebores. Mrs. LaRue was starting transplants of a low variegated grass. There seemed to be a flowering perennial for every month.

In addition to a Japanese maple there were boxwoods and daylilies. Mrs. LaRue said she’s having fun with a banana plant.

With her favorite flowers being “Heidis” and pink roses, Mrs. LaRue said her love of flowers came from her grandmother especially when it comes to pink roses. Growing up, she took care of 5 acres of strawberries. Her husband said he lived in Ashland his whole life. Their daughter, Jenny, and her husband reside in Jeromesville and the July “Yard of the Month” winners have one grandson, Gage, 22, who lives with them.
