Therapeutic Support Group for Cancer Warriors Offered In Ellicottville

A diagnosis of cancer can elicit so many human reactions and responses all weaved into an overwhelming sense of being alone. Some of the most common human reactions following the news of a cancer diagnosis can be: overwhelm, shock, disbelief, fear, anxiety, panic, anger, guilt, shame, loneliness, and a general sense of losing control.  The battle or road of having cancer is nothing to be juggling by yourself.

Several community members, along with mental health therapist, Laura Widger, LCSW, have joined forces to launch a therapeutic support group called “Living with Cancer.” The focus of this group and healing space is to connect and support community members who understand the depths of a cancer diagnosis, as well as hold and gift the blessing of hope, all while learning to implement strategies, tips, tricks, and resources to live in the present moment and soothe those big emotions around the cancer diagnosis.

This “Living with Cancer” group is currently running from July through December bi-weekly. Paticipants can join in anytime.  The August group sessions are scheduled for August 4th and August 18th from 6:30-7:30pm at the United Church of Ellicottville. A few group night topics consist of: being a hope merchant, practicing self-compassion, naming the body’s emotional and physical reactions, utilizing movement as a healing agent, and practicing a general sense of support and care towards one another.  If you or someone you know is interested in joining this healing space and group, please call Laura Widger at 716-244-0089 for more details.

In conclusion, I leave you with a quote from Desmond Tutu: “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”  We hope to see you join “Living with Cancer” therapeutic support group!
