CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Teachers Union is ripping Mayor Lori Lightfoot over the planned firing of two Southeast Side teachers who organized students to protest the General Iron metal shredding facility that was ultimately denied a permit.

George Washington High School teachers Chuck Stark and Lauren Bianchi were at the Loop’s Board of Education headquarters on Wednesday, along with supporters from the union.

“This is a shocking and clear act of retaliation against teachers for our public advocacy against environmental racism in our school community,” Bianchi said.

“Within our building, many teachers taught students about this issue. It became one of the ways that our school could follow through with its commitment to a social justice framework created by our administration. Now, it seems, because a campaign was actually successful, someone has to pay for it,” Stark added.

Teachers Union President Stacy Davis-Gates said this is clearly retaliation by the mayor.

“This is wrong and we will fight,” exclaimed Davis-Gates.

The union said it will use everything at its disposal to fight for the teachers.
