Construction has begun on a new transfer station at the Lincoln County Landfill located on Strawberry Road south of Thayne. The new station is part of an on- going multi-county collaboration for waste management, known as the IDAWY Solid Waste District.

“The new Transfer Station will have a positive impact on our budget,” stated Lincoln County Commissioner Jerry Harmon during a live interview on SVI Radio (Swift 98.7 FM, The Spur 107.5 FM/106.7 FM). “It will decrease the line item on solid waste. There’s a lot of cost savings to being in the district that we’re in.”

“The other thing we can do once the transfer station is completed is stop bailing our garbage,” stated Harmon. “Instead of bailing, we’ll be dumping into big trucks and going to the landfill in either Soda Springs or Kemmerer, which will be a cost savings dramatically for (the county).”

Commissioner Harmon said users of the landfill have already seen some of the benefits. For example, the cost for a resident to dispose of a fridge or freezer at the landfill has gone down from $30 to $10. Harmon said the transfer facility should be completed by spring of 2023.

Along with Lincoln County in Wyoming, IDAWY Solid Waste District also includes the Idaho counties of Bear Lake, Caribou and Oneida. The district officially assumed management of Lincoln County waste facilities on January 1 of 2021. Since then, Lincoln County has provided transfer stations to residents, but once treated, solid waste is transported out of the county to a landfill location between Montpelier and Soda Springs, Idaho. A commissioner from each of the counties worked on the committee that established the district and organized its function.
